21st March 2024: LATEST NEWS

  • Members who have not renewed their subscription for 2024 are reminded that it is now due. The membership rates remain incredibly low and represent excellent value when you consider what the ISC provides – it’s worth it for India Post alone but the ISC has so much more to offer

  • India Post no. 231 will be sent to the printer at the end of this month

  • It is the intention of the ISC Auctioneers, Srinivas Prava (webmaster@indiastudycircle.org) for States material and Deepak Jaiswal (auctioneer@indiastudycircle.org) for British India, that Auction no. 241 will be on the Website by the end of March, to run until 20th April. The Auction list will be sent to members by email as soon as it is available

  • An ISC Display Meeting was held in New Delhi on Sunday 21st January. Fog and low temperatures did not deter members from attending and appreciating the following presentations, which were displayed via Zoom for remote members:

    • Tips on increasing the medal level for your Postal Stationery exhibit by Sandeep Jaiswal:
    • The use of Pre-India labels, printed stationery and receipts to build an Open-Class Exhibit by Dr. Rakesh Thaper:
    • A few notable examples of British India Convention States Stationery by Virendra Sharma:
    • The Indian Aerogrammes by Madhukar Jhingan, and
    • 1947 to 1957 – Jubilee Lines, Orientation Marks, Corner Embellishment and the like by Abhay Tiku.

The possibility of conducting more such display meetings in other parts of the country was discussed.

  • The San Diego Stamp Show 2024 was held in San Diego, California, US, on 23rd to 25th February at the San Diego Mission Valley Hilton. Unfortunately, only three members turned up for the ISC Display meeting, which was, consequently, cancelled. This does appear to be a trend for meetings that are not allied to major International Stamp Shows.

  • The former ISC Membership Secretary, Tom George, gave a display to the Stroud Philatelic Society in Gloucestershire, UK, on 15th February, consisting of 182 sheets on the subjects of:

    • Gwalior Postal Stationery: QV to independence:
    • Barwani Stamps – a run through of the issues:
    • Cochin and Travancore-Cochin – general stamps and postal history:
    • Bhopal general stamps from 1872 through to Service issues with some later Service postal history.

  • On 14th March, the ISC Treasurer, Terry Hare-Walker, and ISC Membership Secretary, Eric Winter, gave a display to High Wycombe Philatelic Society in Buckinghamshire, UK, consisting of 182 sheets on the subject of “Postal History and Stamps of India”.

  • On 19th March, Terry gave a display to Coventry Philatelic Society in the West Midlands, UK, on the subject of Postal History and Stamps of India

  • In the coming weeks, Terry will be giving further displays on:

    • Airmails, on 21st April at a meeting of the British Airmail Society near Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK:
    • Campaign in Mesopotamia, World War 1, to Birmingham Philatelic Society on 30th May and to Wombourne Philatelic Society in Staffordshire, UK, on 20th June, and
    • The RAF Desert Service and Camps in India for Boer Prisoners, to Cannock Philatelic Society in Staffordshire, UK, on 4th June.

  • EuroPhilEx 2025 is a major International Stamp Show that will be held at the National Exhibition Centre, just outside Birmingham, UK, in May 2025. General details have been published on their website: the ISC intends to have an involvement at this show and more details will be announced in due course.

  • Virendra Sharma (virsharma@yahoo.com), the Committee’s Representative in India, has volunteered to oversee an ISC LinkedIn page and Apratim Bhattacharya (apratim87@gmail.com) has volunteered to moderate an ISC ‘X’ site, as an extension to his role as moderator for the ISC WhatsApp/ Facebook group.
